A Routine Shift Ends in Agony
Commercial kitchens are fast-paced environments where heat, heavy equipment, and sharp tools are everywhere. While cooking inherently involves some risk, severe and permanently disfiguring injuries should never be accepted as “just part of the job.”
When restaurant management fails to implement proper safety protocols for handling hazardous materials like boiling grease, the consequences can be catastrophic.
This became a painful reality for a 50-year-old cook working at a Mexican restaurant in Pflugerville, Texas. Her life was forever changed by a completely preventable hazard that was left unchecked in her workspace.
Time is critical in workplace injury cases—don’t wait or risk losing your opportunity to hold your employer accountable."
The Danger of Uninspected Equipment
On November 6, 2023, the employee was diligently working her shift as a cook. She was simply performing the job duties assigned to her by her employer, moving through the kitchen to prepare meals for customers.
Without warning, a cast iron plate filled with cooking grease fell directly onto her. The searing hot fat and oils made direct contact with her left hand, wrist, and forearm. The intense heat caused immediate, excruciating pain, turning a standard workday into a desperate medical emergency.
Second-Degree Burns and Permanent Scarring
Grease burns are notoriously severe because the thick oil clings to the skin, deepening the tissue damage.
Following the incident, the cook was rushed for emergency medical treatment and diagnosed with severe first and second-degree burns across her left forearm, left hand, and left wrist.
The trauma, however, did not end when the initial burns healed. As the skin attempted to repair itself, she developed severe hypertrophic and keloid scarring over the burn sites. These thick, raised scars created severe physical restrictions, prohibiting her from being able to freely move her hand and wrist.
To regain basic mobility, she was forced to undergo an invasive surgery nearly a year later, on October 21, 2024. The complex procedure involved:
- An endoscopic excision to remove the hypertrophic and keloid scar tissue.
- The placement of a Dermapure skin graft over the excised areas on her forearm and hand.
- A surgical release of the Cubital and Guyon’s canals to free the restricted nerves and tendons.
Her medical bills skyrocketed to over $155,000, and she continues to suffer from disfigurement, physical impairment, and persistent pain. The expectation that she can ever return to a physically demanding kitchen job is now incredibly slim.
Could This Searing Accident Have Been Prevented?
A cast iron plate of grease does not fall on an employee in a properly managed kitchen. According to the allegations in this case, the restaurant failed to provide a reasonably safe workplace through several critical oversights:
- Failure to Train: The employer allegedly failed to provide any training on how to properly dispose of grease.
- Failure to Inspect: The restaurant allegedly failed to inspect the cast iron skillets before every shift, which would have warned employees of the existing hazard.
- Unsafe Work Practices: Management allegedly failed to periodically identify and correct the unsafe work practices of their staff.
Crucial Takeaways for Texas Culinary Workers
This catastrophic event serves as a vital warning for cooks, chefs, and kitchen staff across Texas:
- Demand proper grease handling protocols. Hot oil and grease are highly dangerous; there must be a strict, trained method for disposing of them.
- Inspect equipment daily. Cast iron plates and skillets must be checked and properly secured before every single shift.
- Hold negligent employers accountable. If your restaurant fails to train its staff or ignores safety inspections, they can be held legally responsible for your burns, disfigurement, and lost wages.
